Well, the last post got me thinking of this amazing tune from Afrika Bambaataa’s 2004 album ‘Dark Matter Moving at the Speed of Light‘:
Afrika Bambaataa with Gary Numan - Metal
Gary Numan may be a purveyor of cheesy sci-fi robotic early-80’s electro — but that’s a good thing. ;)
The album gets pretty mediocre reviews, which is a shame — this is a massive tune, and there’s some other overlooked good ones there too.

Wow, the lineup for Electric Picnic this year is looking pretty excellent. Unfortunately, more important events beckon… maybe next year.
Here’s one artist I’ll be missing out on:
Tubeway Army - Down In The Park

Dublin’s electronic music scene has tended towards a sharp division between chin-stroking laptop noodlery and full-on cheddar cheese (Mark McCabe’s Maniac, or that hideous happy house album of tunes like Fields of Athenry) spring to mind.
Hystereo deserve a clap on the back for their attempt at a French-style electro house album. The masked shadows of Daft Punk might fall a tad too heavily on their debut album, Corporate Crimewave, but there’s still plenty to like.
Here’s the album opener, a real slow burner that I used on a Champions League promo for RTE. Is that interesting? Perhaps not.

There may not be too much of it left, but here’s to as long and hot an Irish summer as I can remember.

So, Daft Punk are playing here in Dublin on August 25th. They’ve just announced their support acts, including Justice, another French two-piece DJ outfit.
Here’s an excellent remix of a DFA1979 track, where Justice match up the DFA1979 metal guitars with some suitably speedy arpeggios:
Death From Above 1979 - Blood on our Hands (Justice Remix)
Here’s a good tune of their own — you can hear the Daft Punk influence a lot, and plenty of chiptune sounds:
Justice - Let There Be Light
Looking forward to it!

I’m not so sure about that Beck tune — I need to give that one more time and think about it. It’s his voice, I think. Mind you, I loved his chiptune remixes…
Anyway, here’s another one I’ve been really enjoying, kind of in the ESG vein. It’s a 2004 DFA release from Pixeltan (mislabelled, btw — it’s actually ‘Get Up / Say What’, rather than the shorter ‘Get Up’).
I think I’ve been increasingly getting into longer tunes — this one’s 9 minutes long. Neu!-ish, echoed and repetitive hot-girl vocals, constant one-note super-low bassline, handclaps, arpeggiated synth noises (my favourite!), and a relentless beat. Great!

The boy with one of rock’s most inimitable hairstyles is back and this is a return to the sophisticated pop of his breakthrough years. Last year’s lukewarm Guero also took a trip back to the meandering indie funk of Odelay, with seriously mixed results. This single off the forthcoming LP promises a lot more. Apologies for quiet level on the MP3. I couldn’t be bothered to sort it.

Not, of course, to be confused with:
