Breakfast in Heaven

April 26th, 2007 jmason23

That mystery Lindstrom tune? it’s called Breakfast in Heaven and — omfg — there’s an MP3 here… amazing! Get it while it’s hot; this is an unreleased promo, and I’m not sure how long that blog will have it up there.

Also — buy Lindstrom stuff! Feedelity releases are now up on iTunes. I’ve got to get my windows fixed so as I can pick some up…

Crystal Castles, again

April 26th, 2007 jmason23

Maximum Joy have written up some info on the Crystal Castles gig:

CRYSTAL CASTLES // CAP PAS CAP - MAY 11th @ Kennedys They formed the band accidentally and released a microphone test as their first single, yet it’s with great delirium that we welcome CRYSTAL CASTLES to Maximum Joy for their debut gig in Dublin. A duo from Toronto, CRYSTAL CASTLES (Alice and Ethan) have created a bit of a sensation with releases such as 7″ ‘Alices Practice’ which sold out in days; the - up there on myspace - ‘Magic Spells’, just listen to it, stunning… (jm: see below); as well as acclaimed remixes of various hipster bands (KLAXONS, THE LITTLE ONES, HEALTH etc). This has culminated in recent appearances at the NME Rave Tour w/CSS and SXSW, not to mention a forthcoming tour with The Presets. Phew! Their music has been variously described as 8 bit art punk, spazz rock, lo-fi and no-wave slo-disco elektro-jam(s), console sounds for the devil… ok I made that last one up but you know what I’m saying.

Of course, guess who had to book their flipping holidays from May 11th to May 24, thereby tidily missing Crystal Castles (May 11), New Young Pony Club (May 20), and TTC (May 24)? doh! Anyway, enjoy Magic Spells:

Crystal Castles - Magic Spells

BTW, I noticed at the CSS gig last Saturday that the music between acts was pretty much the entirety of Kate Bush’s 1986 album, “The Whole Story”. yay Kate Bush ;)

Kings of Leon

April 20th, 2007 jmason23

Their new album is really growing on me. Unfortunately they’ve gone for a much more indie production, replacing their ’70s southern rock sound from the previous two albums, but there’s still a few great tunes on it:

Kings of Leon - Camaro

New Lindstrom tunes

April 16th, 2007 jmason23

One of the unreleased Lindstrom tunes from that live set recording I linked to back in January has dropped and been posted over at 20 Jazz Funk Greats. It’s a collaboration billed as “Lindstrom and Solale” called “Let’s Practice”, and is pure Moroder-tastic space disco genius! Pick up the MP3 at xxjfg.

I’m really waiting for the second new tune I didn’t recognise, though — I stream-ripped a (lousy) copy from the live set MP3:

Lindstrom - Unknown Track (stream-rip)

This has been living in my favourites playlist for 4 months, seriously. Just wait for the Freak Electrique-style string sound to come in around 3:30 — hair-raising! Can’t wait for this one…

Update!: it’s called “Breakfast in Heaven”. enjoy!

Ros Sereysothea

April 12th, 2007 jmason23

I’ve been digging deeper into the story of Cambodian rock in the 60’s and early 70’s, following on from my Dengue Fever obsession. I should have realised it’d have a tragic end…

Sinn Sisamouth, the ‘Emperor of Khmer music’, was jailed and murdered by the Khmer Rouge; similarly, Ros Sereysothea, the “Golden Voice of the Royal Capital”, was forced by Pol Pot to marry one of his assistants, and similarly is believed to have been murdered during the Killing Fields years. This amazing site provides lots of detail on her life story.

‘The Golden Voice’, a movie about her final days, has just been selected for the 2007 Beverly Hills Film Festival — must keep an eye out for that.

In the meantime, there are a few MP3s around, in particular on that life-story site. Here’s one to enjoy:

Ros Sereysothea - Chnam Oun 16 (I’m Sixteen)

(btw I’m not certain this is her — the original MP3 (from the ‘Cambodian Rocks’ compilation) was untitled. But as far as this non-Khmer-speaker can tell, I’m pretty sure it is…)

And a Dengue Fever cover:

Dengue Fever - Chnam Oun 16 (I’m Sixteen)

Update: forgot about this one! Here’s a great sample of Sereysothea’s voice by Plastic Little last year:

Plastic Little - Crambodia (ft Ghostface, Amanda Blank, Bahamadia)

ripping the riff and chorus hook from:

Ros Sereysothea - Chnang Jass Baiy Chgagn

More Hot Chip, and some psych

April 11th, 2007 jmason23

Hot Chip’s latest tune, ‘My Piano’ is another great one — they’re unstoppable!

This is for their DJ Kicks compilation, interesting tracklisting too. I’m spending a lot of time listening to FABRICLIVEs and DJ Kicks, so I’m perfectly ok with this.

Also: lately I have been on the lookout for melodic 60’s psychedelia. Here’s a good one I found:

The Association - Pandora’s Golden Heebie Jeebies (1966)

oh btw, for the Black Moth Super Rainbow fans — 20jazzfunkgreats have just posted a new track of theirs…

New Björk

April 11th, 2007 jmason23

Wow, the new Björk tune, “Earth Intruders”, is great — with help from Timbaland and some Konono #1, she’s rediscovered percussion! yay!

MP3 over here. Looking forward to the album…

Last-minute Hot Chip DJ set news

April 6th, 2007 jmason23

Falling into my RSS reader this morning: Bacardi B-Live presents HOT CHIP (DJ set) — this Sunday night. Relevant snippets:

Bacardi B-Live presents HOT CHIP (DJ set) 8th Apr 07 BACARDI B-Live Series presents Hot Chip (DJ Set), Bugz in the Attic, DJ Mehdi, Shock DJs, Choice Cut DJs, Space Camp DJs Venue: Access All Areas Price: Tickets €22.50 (inc booking fee) available from Ticketmaster, Road Records, City Discs, Sound Cellar and usual outlets *No longer available online, but can be purchased on the door*

The Hot Chip bio:

‘The Calling’ which was Hot Chip’s second album released in 2006 was unanimously answered by a swelling contingent of fans. Infectious beats, bleeps, grooves and lyrics all made up the finest concoction of pop about. “We decided to write folk songs and record them on old synthesizers. We decided to sing honest words about food and love, and try to make people laugh the way you laugh at Richard Pryor in the same song too,” claim the band. Finding out the tracks that have influenced them and that they’ve been picking up on the road amidst the madness of a dancing like a wild thing to ‘Over and Over’ should make it a memorable night.

DJ Mehdi, too:

Signed to label du jour ‘Ed Banger Records’, DJ Mehdi is a true blue, white and red blooded Parisienne. Mehdi dropped his debut album ‘Lucky Boy’ last autumn and is fortunate to have the likes of Chromeo and Kenny Dope from Masters At Work providing vocals and remixes to the first single lifted from it ‘I am Somebody’. DJ Mehdi has been producing major french Hip-hop artists since 1995 while making great noise (and platinum albums) with his bands Ideal J and 113, remixing various electronic acts and composing soundtracks for many french and international films. His resumé mentions collabos with the largest scope, from MC SOLAAR to DAFT PUNK, CASSIUS, JOAKIM, or SUPER DISCOUNT, globe-trotters NEW YOUNG PONY CLUB, JUST JACK or ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI plus legends like FUTURA2000 and RYUICHI SAKAMOTO.

bit more warning would have been good — I need a decent online Dublin-club newsfeed…

Tune of the day: “Raven”, from Cajuan, the Joakim remix. get it!

Freak Electrique

April 4th, 2007 jmason23

Whoa, lots of stuff going on, too busy to blog :(

Here’s a quick MP3 or two:

The Isolators Feat. Bebe - Interdit (Ce Soir) (Freak Electrique Remix)

Spacey italo-disco on I-F’s Viewlexx label, mp3 via this year’s CBS Top 100 (hence a little bit of bonus Dutch vocoder voice over at the beginning ;). Freak Electrique +1!

Ladytron - Miss Black

Ladytron have been announced as playing that damn Electric Picnic shindig. Bugger! Another brililant band I’ll be missing! Anyway, here’s a great B-side from around the time of their “604″ album, with lots of Hammer Horror vibes: heavy organ riffs, evil laughter, the works. Enjoy it you Electric-Picnic-going bastards.
