Os Mutantes last night was great, despite missing a couple of members due to illness. That dreadlocked girl on the { drums / misc percussion } made a definite impression…
The gig wasn’t exactly jammers, but I think pretty much the entire Dublin Brazilian community made it out.

Next up is Of Montreal, next Wednesday, who apparently occasionally do the odd Os Mutantes cover themselves. The ticket situation isn’t too hot for this one, but fingers crossed anyway.

I used to hang out with OS Mutantes 1969-1972 when they’d come to Rio. I appreciate your understanding of the band’s situation; minus Arnaldo Baptista on keyboard and Zélia Duncan on vocals the band has got to have suffered.
Your buddy at the other blog, with awesome photos and one video doesn’t seem to get it. In addition, to say they are Beatles-influenced is a redundant statement. We all were. And Tropicália was about absorbing foreign influences regurgitating them Brazilian. My cousin Hélio Oiticica’s installation art of Tropicália was purchased by Tate Gallery. His art will be on display till sometime in September. The psychedelic adjective for OS Mutantes is a misnomer. They are tropicalists later on adding some progressive rock. Anyway, glad you liked it. I have some stuff from my visit backstage to see the boys aafter 30+ years!

Part of the fun of listening to music like Tropicalia, when I wasn’t even born in the 60’s, is figuring out how it sounded, how it was played, and what the scene was like there and then. I’d love to get over to the Tate to see that exhibition — there’s a lot of fascinating context to the whole scene I still don’t get!
